Family Spionidae
Distribution: Sungei Buloh, Kallang Basin, Singapore River, Pulau Semakau, Pulau Tekong, Sungei Punggol.
The spionids are suspension and deposit feeders inhabiting permanent or mucus-lined burrows or tubes. They use their peristomial palps to stretch out over substratum to gather food particles. All spionids live in burrows in intertidal sandbanks where there are sufficient water movement to keep the detritus moving. It is also observed that they use their peristomial palps in a whipping motion to catch plankton and suspended detrital particles. . Only suitable sized particles are ingested while others are rejected at the mouth. Some live on dead corals, soft limestones while others bore into mollusc shells. Some use their proboscis for digging and feeding.
Species found in Singapore include:
- Prionospio komaeti
- Prionospio malayensis
