Pulau Semakau

Pulau (=island) Semakau is located off the southwestern coast of mainland Singapore. This island has profuse mangrove growth and is surrounded by large fringing reef and a few large patch reefs beyond the fringing reef. The reef flat extends to 500 m at its widest. The eastern shore of the island supports narrow mangrove forest while a seagrass meadow occurs on the western reef flat.

No reclaimation work or industrial development has been carried out on the island till 2 years ago when dumping of earth south of the island has increased the sedimentation in the area turning the western seabed muddy. The sea on the eastern side of the island has a higher deposition of silt because it has been designated for use as a solid waste disposal site with the construction of retaining bunds linking the eastern half of the island to the smaller islands and patch reefs to the east. Surveys had been conducted in 3 sampling stations.
