Family Paraonidae

Distribution: Sungei Buloh, Kallang Basin, Pulau Semakau, Singapore River
conical head preserved specimen
Paraonidae with cockscrew body shape

The paraonids are tiny threadlike worms which burrow just below the surface of the sandy mud. Most of them inhabit spiral burrows as suggested by the corkscrew shape of their body. They are non-selective deposit feeders of detritus. Their gut is often full of sand grains. It is also suggested that they feed on foraminifera, diatoms and sediment as they are found in a range of sediment types from pure sands to silty muds. These worms are without palps.
