Pulau Ayer Chawan is part of a group of 10 islands off the southwestern
coast of mainland Singapore. Like Pulau Tekong, this island has also been
extensively reclaimed. Further reclaimation is in progress to link all these
islands and create a single land mass that can support the petro-chemical industries.
This development is expected all the remaining reefs and mangroves as well bury a large extent
of the soft-bottom habitats.
The island was chosen for benthic studies due to a high concentration of
petrochemical industries in the area. 5 sampling
stations were surveyed.
