Family Maldanidae "Bamboo worms"

Distribution: Sungei Buloh, Pulau Semakau, Singapore River, Kallang Basin, Sungei Punggol
The maldanids are highly specialised burrowers feeding on organic particles such as protozoans and diatoms buried in mud. They burrow head downwards cementing the surrounding materials together to form a fairly compact tube. Popularly known as "bamboo worms", the worms appeared jointed in appearance. They are commonly found in shelf sediments inhabiting soft bottoms from intertidal to abyssal depths. They are all tubiculous living in mud-walled tubes plugging the entrance with their pygidium. They are dark red or orange. Species found in Singapore include:
  • Euclymene lombricoides
Maldanidae anterior posterior
