Lysaretids are among the largest of the polychaetes. They are known as burrowers in coral reefs and sandy sediments. They are able to pulverize the calcareous sediments with their jaws thus are associated with coral reef destruction. They bore through the corals while holding on to it. They occur primarily as tropical reef-inhabiting polychaetes with range extensions into the warm, temperate regions. Generally, they are found in shallow depths (intertidal 80 m) but have been reported up to 132 m.
