Kallang Basin

Kallang Basin is located on the south-eastern sector of Singapore. It is enclosed by reclaimed land that is now known as Marina Center to the west, Kallang Park to the east and once Kampong Bugis to the north. Three major rivers, Kallang River, Geylang River and Rochor River drain into the basin. The bottom is mainly mud.

The basin used to be heavily polluted in the early 1970s due to the presence of thriving pig and duck farms which contributed organic waste to the basin via the source rivers. Besides the contribution of various wastes from the various farming activities, other pollutants were emptied from unchecked street hawking, back-yard industries and whole-sale markets into the basin.

Due to the badly polluted conditions of the basin, a ten-year clean-up and redevelopment programme commenced in 1977. Prior to the programme's completion in mid-1987, a two-day hydrobiological survey was conducted and another in 1988 after its completion. A total of 6 sampling stations were conducted in each year.
