Family Flabelligeridae "bristlecage worms"

Distribution: Pulau Semakau, Kallang Basin

Flabelligeridae

Flabelligeridae

The flabelligerids have been referred as "bristle-cage worms" because of the characteristic cage of long setae surrounding the head region. Silt and sand particles adhere to the mucoid secretion produced by it giving the flabelligerids a grainy appearance. They are non-tubicolous. They are deposit feeders and use their large frilly palps to collect food particles such as diatoms, radiolaria, foraminifera, porifera algae and detritus from the surface. They also beat the cilia on the branchiae creating a current to drive suspended particles towards where they are ingested indicating suspension-feeding. They live under loose stones in rock pools, sandy pools, rocky shores and burrow in U shaped burrows or exploit abandoned burrows of molluscs under the sand. Species found in Singapore include:

  • Pherusa monroi
