05 Jul 2007 - Raffles Museum News has shifted to http://news.rafflesmuseum.net Sat 02 Oct 2004 'Useless' wastelands turn up wealth of animal lifeCategory : news The Straits Times reports today that 'Associate Professor Peter Ng, Director of the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research, was recently singled out by the journal Nature for his ground-breaking work that has uncovered a wealth of animal life in habitats long neglected and dismissed as barren'
"'I hope that my work will paint a more complete picture of the diversity of animal life, so that conservation efforts can take these areas into account,' he said.
'Perhaps, in a small way, this research will change the perception of what has often been described as useless wasteland, and make people think twice before destroying it.
'At the very least, the excuse 'species poor' will no longer be a valid one.'"

They were introduced to botanical drawings in the literature and went on a short field trip to examine the morphology of some of the common plants of Kent Ridge.
Their teacher, Ping, cycles to work on a foldable bike and is a Raffles Museum volunteer guide on the Pedal Ubin programme. ![]() Sat 02 Oct 2004 Visitors from LIPI Oceanography managing Pari IslandCategory : visitors ![]() Yeti Daramayati and colleagues from the Oecanography branch of the Indonesia's Institute of Sciences visited the Raffles Museum on 27-28 Sep 2004. They engaged in discussions with staff and students and studied the manner in which the collections are maintained, exhibitions are setup and public education programmes are conducted and managed. In the next two days, they also visited a few other places in Singapore including Sungei Buloh Wetlands Reserve.
Pari Island is part of the Thousand Islands (Pulau Seribu) off Jakarta Bay in Indonesia. It is host to mangrove, coral reef, rocky shore, sandy beaches, coral rubble and coral reefs. Local communities have turned to seaweed farming in part of the islands, as a means of livelihood. Yeti and colleagues intend to setup a visitor education centre including exhibits, and strengthen the public education programmes and volunteer training at Pari Island, where they already have a marine centre.
We wish them every success in their efforts! |
