Reviews

Private Lives: An Exposé of Singapore’s Mangroves

I can't tell you how much pleasure quality publications by our own academics about Singapore's biodiversity such as this one gives me. Informative, attractive and practical, this publication is not meant to stay on a bookshelf, but taken along on a field-trip to our vanishing mangroves.
From Dr. Kiat W. Tan § Advisor to NParks

Private Lives: An Exposé of Singapore’s Shores

"This book is a real jewel: packed with colour photographs of superior quality, there hardly is a page that is not displaying some intriguing sea creature... The text is also special: the authors, all well-known marine biologists and university teachers, have availed themselves of the opportunity this publication has offered them to share their broad experience and knowledge with a wide public, evidently ranging from the interested (and educated) layman to the highly critical colleague abroad... Everyone with an interest in the sea and/or in crustaceans, who has a chance to have a look into this book will immediately buy it: of that I am convinced!" more »
From Dr J. C. von Vaupel Klein, a crustacean expert.

Fascinating Insects in Singapore

"A very good, attractive and informative insect guidesheet for Singapore's native insects! The brief information on each group of insects is useful for people who wish to know a little more about the diversity of native insects of Singapore. I wish the pictures could be bigger but understand that there is a limit of space on the guidesheet. The background colours of the sections for different orders of insects could have more contrast, but again, this may affect the look of this very nicely designed guidesheet."
From Mr Tang Hung Bun, a nature lover and teacher.

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

"The guidebook is a treasure chest of information! There’s so much in there that I did not know. This is something that park visitors could not only use while they are in the park but refer to long after they have returned home. I also like the photographs and the way it is written – in a simple and concise manner. I specially like the “Be a Gentle Visitor” and “You can Make a Difference” sections which will help park visitors to do the right thing. I think the ecological concepts have been put forth in a way that can be easily understood by the lay person. For someone who is interested in nature and BTNR, this is a wonderful source of information and definitely worth the price of $5.00"
From Ms Seetha Sharma, a parent

"I think the dark green background brings to life the colourful animal and plant pictures which stand out, making the guidesheet very attractive. The text is also fun and packed full of interesting and important information. The only disadvantage of the latter is that the print is small, and for people with failing eyesight like me and similarly old people, it’s hard to read unless there is good light! If there is a version for younger kids, perhaps the text could be less wordy, contain less information and be larger in font."
From Dr Vilma D'Rozario, Chairperson, Education Group, Nature Society (Singapore)
