Hydrobasileus croceus (Brauer, 1867)

Description

In males, the hindwing is 42 to 45 mm in length and the total body length ranges from 46 to 49 mm. The thorax and eyes of the male are orange-brown. The abdomen is also orange-brown, but has black markings near the end (segments four to ten). The hindwing base is yellowish brown but there is an irregular brown band running for a short distance from the inner margin, parallel to and just in from the hind margin. The female has a similar appearance, but with less dark markings at the abdomen.

Distribution

Ranges throughout tropical Asia.

Localities

This common dragonfly can be found in well-vegetated ponds in open country such as Marina East, Tuas, East Coast Parkway, Mandai and mature gardens such as Bishan Park. It can also be seen in open areas in the forested reservoirs.

General Biology

The male is often seen patrolling over water, and rarely perches. It is sun-loving species, flying constantly above ponds and lakes during late morning when it is sunny.
