This webpage is dedicated to the late Dato Loke Wan Tho (1915-1964)

The late Dato Loke Wan Tho was a businessman, photographer, philanthropist and amateur naturalist. He had made contributions to ornithology and conservation, not only in Singapore but throughout the Orient. His interest in birds was consolidated during the Second World War when he was evacuated to India. There he came in contact with Salim Ali and accompanied him on several expeditions when the Indian State Surveys were being carried out by the Bombay Natural History Society. On his return to Singapore, though business matters left him little time for field studies, his philanthropy supported Asian ornithology extensively. He published several articles, but his best known work is a book entitled "A Company of Birds" (Loke, 1958), illustrated by his own photographs, many of which were taken in Singapore. He was killed in an air crash in Taiwan in June 1964.

H. C. Robinson, Curator of the Selangor Museum in Kuala Lumpur in 1903, first started work on the five-volume “Birds of Malay Peninsula”, which to this day, remain as one of the most important ornithological reference for Southeast Asia. In 1927 he published the first volume on the common birds, and in 1928 another volunme on montane species. He died in May 1929, unable to complete the project.

Frederick Nutter Chasen, Curator of the Raffles Museum in 1923, took over the project on the publication of “Birds of the Malay Peninsula”. Using many of Robinson's notes and papers, in 1936, he produced Volume III - Sporting birds; Birds of the Shore and Estuaries, in posthumous collaboration with Robinson. In 1939, Chasen (1939a) wrote Birds of the Malay Peninsula Volume IV (The Birds of the Low Country Jungle and Scrub). Chasen died in 1941 after his boat sunk while trying to escape from the Japanese during World World II. Much of his notes and records were lost with him, including his plans for Volume V of the Birds of the Malay Peninsula.

In 1975, Lord Medway (now Earl of Cranbrook) and David Wells completed Volume V of the Birds of the Malay Peninsula which had been started 48 years earlier by Robinson and had out-lived two successive authors. The work summarised the knowledge of birds in this region up to that date, including the advances that had been made in Singapore. This last volume is not digitised in this project.

This webpage contains all the original text and colour plates figured in volumes 1-4 of the “Birds of Malay Peninsula”. Although written 80 years ago, the volumes remain an important reference for ornithologists working in Southeast Asia and a baseline for most authors who wrote field guides and bird books in this region. Yet, this book is also very rare in collections and not easily available to most students and laymen. The Raffles Museum has digitised these four volumes to allow everyone interested in Southeast Asian ornithology an easy access.

The chapters are arranged in pdfs as they appeared in the books, followed by all the colour plates.

These books are digitised by Wang Luan Keng.

Acknowledgements
Our sincere appreciation to Lady Yuen-Peng McNeice for partially funded this project. We thank the Science Library, National University of Singapore, for loan of the four volumes of books.
