Abstract
Originating from the private collection of the Austrian emperor Franz Stephan I, for more than 250 years, the Natural History Museum Vienna has maintained a tradition in exploring, documenting, and describing nature. Earlier expeditions reached all continents, and today, more than 50 scientists work in earth sciences and biodiversity research. In Southeast Asia, true aquatic bugs (Nepomorpha) and semi-aquatic bugs (Gerromorpha) are represented by 16 families and an uncounted number of genera and species. They display a large variety of morphological adaptations and life strategies. The species diversity is still insufficiently documented, and in remote areas, up to 40% of species may be undescribed. Geographical species diversification and general distribution patterns are explained with some examples.
