"Sulawesi - Straddling East and West" Jaap J. Vermeulen Tuesday, 11th March 2003: 4.00pm - 5.00pm DBS Seminar Room 4 Visitors may park at
Carpark 10 Host: A/P Benito Tan About the Talk "The archipelago between Asia and Australia is a geologically active area, where islands slowly moving along Australia in a north-westerly direction meet islands that form the frontier of the Asian continent. Sulawesi lies exactly in between, and this is reflected in its flora and fauna. For instance, its orchid flora includes elements from both the southeast (New Guinea) and the northwest (Sunda Shelf: Sumatra, Java and Borneo). It is also the home of many endemic orchid species. Unfortunately, the role of Sulawesi as a key component in the strategy to preserve the biodiversity of SE Asia is not sufficiently recognised."
About the speaker Dr. Jaap Vermuelen is a vascular plant curator and researcher at the Herbarium of the Singapore Botanic Gardens (SING). He got his Ph.D from the Unviersity of Leiden and is currently one of the authorities in orchid taxonomy in Malesia focusing on the genus Bulbophyllum. Aside from being a contributor to the Flora of Malesia project, he is also a specialist in the study of diversity of land snails in Asia.
