ABSTRACT
Isopods belong to the Superorder Peracarida, part of the Class Malacostraca,
the crustacean group which includes the familiar crabs and shrimps.
The Isopoda are familiar to many as pill bugs, slaters or
sow bugs that live in suburban gardens under rocks and wood, and to
anglers as parasites of fishes. Isopods occur world wide from mountains
and deserts to the great ocean depths, and number approximately 11,000
species, about half of which are marine. Isopods range in size from
one millimetre (or so) to the large Bathynomus which exceeds 30 centimetres
in length, and exhibit great species diversity and also show the greatest
morphological diversity of any crustacean group. Our talk will illustrate
marine isopod diversity, aspects of our research, and outline our current
work on the morphological and molecular phylogeny of the family Sphaeromatidae.
